Valve Hits The Brakes On Artifact Development

A few years ago, some of you might recall that Valve announced and eventually launched the Artifact game. For those who are unfamiliar, Artifact is a card-based video game that is also loosely based on Dota 2. The game was initially met with favorable reviews, but eventually the cost of playing the game was simply too much for players.

Valve promised that they would be going back to the drawing board and work on a reboot, but as it turns out, it looks like that will no longer be happening. The company has since announced that they will be pausing the development on Artifact. They do not state that the game has been cancelled, but there’s a good chance we won’t be able to expect it to resume in the future.

According to Valve, “It’s now been about a year and a half since the current Artifact team began work on a reboot in earnest. While we’re reasonably satisfied we accomplished most of our game-side goals, we haven’t managed to get the active player numbers to a level that justifies further development at this time. As such, we’ve made the tough decision to stop development on the Artifact 2.0 Beta.”

That being said, Artifact will continue to remain playable, except that Valve has decided to make the game completely free. Players will be able to access every card for free and they will no longer have to buy card packs. Players who have already spent money will have their cards turned into Collector’s Editions, and  events with paid tickets have also been removed.
